I didn’t even want to review this CD due to how utterly disgusted I
am with it. Garbage began as a unique alternative rock band that
deserved the title ‘alternative’. But they have slowly been getting
more commercial, and this latest release by them is as commercial as
it gets.
This overall album is so sugary sweet that I literally get ill listening
to it. Garbage takes upbeat and sappy to whole new level on this release.
This album sounds as manufactured as albums released by Christina
Aguilera, The Backstreet Boys, NSYNC and Britney
Spears. Oh…the horror!
Unless you want an album packed full of upbeat sugary sweet manufactured
rock tunes, stay as far away from this as you can. You have been warned…

I
really enjoyed the first Garbage release because they were a band doing
something slighty different and new. They blended a dark mood with a
rock edge, slight electronics and a great female singer. Now Garbage
return with their second offering "Version 2.0". While it's
an overall good album, I am a bit disappointed with it. The band now
seems to want to appeal to a wider audience with more of a radio/MTV
friendly alternative pop vibe. The first five songs "Temptation
Waits", "I Think I'm Paranoid", "When I Grow Up",
"Medication" and "Special" especially have an upbeat,
cheerful and playful feel about them. They sound very commercial
and mainstream. I don't enjoy them at all. The album does pick up on
track six with "Hammering In My Head". This track is
very energetic with almost pure electronic music that packs a dance
floor punch. Shirley Manson unleashes a great vocal delivery here singing
both energetic and melodic with a mixture of both clean and slightly
distorted vocals. This is easily the best track on the album. The album
keeps going strong from here with track seven "Push It". This
is another energetic rock song with a lot of variety included. Track
eight "The Trick Is To Keep Breathing" is a more slower paced
and mellow song that is extremely well done. It has a cold mood to it
and is quite beautiful. Track nine "Dumb" brings back the
techno energy and is another song that really stands out. It's fast
paced and aggressive with a catchy chorus. Track ten "Sleep Together"
is medium paced with a good beat. It includes various changes that go
from fairly energy packed to more melodic at times. Track eleven "Wicked
Ways" is a little out of place with a blues/jazz vibe. It's good,
but a little too funky and silly for me. Track twelve "You Look
So Fine" is slow paced and moody with a cold edge. It's a great
song to end the album with. Overall this is a quality well produced
release. However, it's flooded with too many happy, cheerful and commercial
sounding songs. There are some really good tracks here, but I don't
know if they're enough to make this a good purchase or not. I myself
was hoping for something better.
