This is a disappointing follow up to The Wake's debut album "Masked. The band basically sounds exactly the same, and aren't trying anything new or different. Actually, I found the songs on "Masked" to be much more enjoyable. The band seems to have lost something on this new release. The songs here seem a bit bland and boring. They aren't very catchy, and only reach about three minutes each. The guitars and drums drown out the electronics and synths. The singing is the same deep voiced and clear voice that it was on "Masked", but doesn't seem to try anthing new. It's the same on every song. The music doesn't change much, either. This album is solid, straight forward, and tight. It is a decent goth rock album for the most part. But don't expect anything new. If the band focused on synths more and added in some female background vocals, they would be much better. But as they are now they are very generic and boring.

This band sounds very similar to The Sisters Of Mercy. The singer of this band sounds exactly like Andrew Eldritch. If I heard this band on the radio, I would think that they were The Sisters Of Mercy. That is how alike that they sound. The music is medium paced and catchy. It's constructed with guitars, drums, and synths. The vocals are deep voiced, and sing very clear. The overall sound of the album is very dark with haunting synths to set the eerie mood. Each and every song found here is just as good as the next. They have subtle differences that allow them to stand apart. The bottom line is that if you like goth music, you will like The Wake a lot. Especially if you are a big fan of The Sisters Of Mercy.
